Spring and summer are great times to have parties outside but they do come with some pests to deal with.
Bugs are a major issue at summer outdoor parties. Luckily there are many options to combat these pests. Options include:
- Citronella candles
- Extermination spray a few days in advance
- Bug spray
- Covering food and drinks
Citronella candles are a popular option for repelling bugs. They are cheap and effective. Citronella candles can even add ambiance to an evening party since they look like regular candles in a holder.
Extermination is a good option if you have a lot of mosquitos. Having a professional come out a few days in advance allows the chemicals to work, keeps your backyard from smelling and does not allow too much time for bugs to come back.
Bug spray can be a tricky option because of small children and allergies. As long as you make sure that the bottles are kept out of reach and children are sprayed only after a parent says ok, then it can be a good option. Just make sure you have enough spray for everyone.
Lastly, covering food with bug nets will keep bugs out of food and keep ants from joining the party. Serving drinks in cans or single size bottles will keep bugs away from drinks.
Rain can pop up suddenly, so it is best to be prepared for rain just in case. Renting a tent with sidepanels is a great way to defend against rain. You can leave the tent open if it is sunny or close the tent in with sidewalls if it rains.
Even if you decide to rent a tent in case of rain, you should have a backup plan. Tents are good in rain, but if the wind gets too strong the tents need to be evacuated. A back up plan might be an alternate location such as in your home or a rain date for the following day or the following week. Just make sure you let guests know what to do in case of bad weather.
Sun may not seem like a pest until you see how burnt you are the next day. Taking precautions against the sun is easy:
- Cold drinks
A tent shields guest and food from the sun and can protect guests in case of pop up rain showers. However, simple steps such as applying sunscreen, making sure everyone has cold drinks and a sprinkler can keep guest cool and protected from the sun.
